Astronomical basis

Alpha Draconis, Thuban, lay very close to the north celestial pole in the third millennium BCE. Edasich marks an earlier part of the same section of the modelled path.

Atlas interpretation

The atlas reads the pole's passage through Draco as an image of the serpent at the centre of the fallen world. This is a theological association, not an official astronomical meaning.

Summary

The Dragon occupies a vast region of the northern sky and coils around the Little Flock. In the accepted chronology of the atlas, its stars became polar during the era when fallen angels usurped the authority given to Adam. However, nearby stands the Kneeler, striking the Dragon's head and fulfilling the promise of Christ's victory over the ancient serpent.

Full interpretation

Verifiable historical, etymological and topographical statements are accompanied by sources. The theological conclusions are the project’s interpretation according to its published methodology.

The constellation of the Dragon covers a significant portion of the northern sky and winds around Ursa Minor — the Little Flock. It is not part of the zodiac, but lies near the north celestial pole, as if surrounding the center of the visible rotation of the heavens.[Hunger & Pingree · MUL.APIN][Rogers · Origins][Вавилонские звёздные каталоги][Stellarium · MUL.APIN]

In biblical history, the Dragon is an image of Satan and the angels who rebelled with him:

'And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan.'[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

After the Fall, Adam lost authority over the earth, and the world came under the influence of spiritual forces of evil. Therefore the position of the Dragon at the ancient pole becomes an image of authority temporarily seized by the ancient serpent.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

The Dragon at the celestial pole

In the accepted chronology of the atlas, the period roughly 5500–1500 BC corresponds to the era of the dominion of fallen powers. During this time, the role of polar markers successively passed to the stars of the Dragon.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

Edasich — ι Draconis is associated with images of a hyena, jackal, or wolf. These predators become symbols of force that pursues and plunders the flock.

Later, Thuban — α Draconis approached the pole. Around the third millennium BC, it was nearly at the north celestial pole and served as the main marker of the sky.

The name Thuban means 'serpent' or 'dragon'. Associated with this region are also images of the serpent's head, basilisk, and a huge man-eating serpent. In the ancient Sumerian tradition, part of the head and body of this figure was conveyed by the name UR.BAR.RA — 'wolf'.[Hunger & Pingree · MUL.APIN][Rogers · Origins][Вавилонские звёздные каталоги][Stellarium · MUL.APIN][Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

Thus, at the center of the ancient sky was the image of a predatory force surrounding the Little Flock.

The Little Flock encircled by the Dragon

The Dragon seems to coil around Ursa Minor. In the overall history of the atlas, Ursa Minor signifies the Little Flock — Israel, from whom the promised Savior was to come.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

The ancient serpent sought to destroy God's people and prevent the appearance of the Seed of the woman. This struggle runs through the entire biblical history: from the persecution of the offspring of promise to the attempt to destroy the newborn Christ.

However, the Dragon cannot devour the Little Flock. From it arises the true King and Shepherd, who takes back from the serpent the authority he usurped.

The Kneeler strikes the Dragon

Next to the Dragon stands the Kneeler. His foot is placed on the serpent's head, while the Dragon itself approaches his heel.

The heavenly scene directly echoes the first promise of a Savior:

'He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.'

The Kneeler depicts Christ, who humbled Himself before the Father, accepted suffering, and through the Cross crushed the power of Satan. The serpent struck His heel — Christ died, but rose again. Christ struck the serpent's head — He destroyed the foundation of his authority.

Nearby shines the Northern Crown — the Crown of life, belonging to the Victor and promised to all who follow Him.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

Thus a unified picture emerges:

The Dragon surrounds the Flock → the Kneeler comes to it → accepts the wound → strikes the serpent's head → receives the Victor's Crown.

Tannin — the ancient serpent

The biblical word tannin denotes a serpent, dragon, sea monster, or huge predatory creature. It emphasizes not the appearance of one animal, but the force that rises against God's order.

In the book of Job it is said:

'His hand has formed the swift serpent.'

This image of the twisting celestial serpent reminds us that even the Dragon remains a created being. He is not equal to God and cannot escape His authority. His dominion is temporary, and the sentence is already determined.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

Unified meaning of the constellation

The Dragon shows the authority that the ancient serpent seized after the fall of man. He surrounds the Little Flock, occupies the region of the ancient pole, and seems to lay claim to the central place in the world.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

But the heavenly narrative does not end with the Dragon's dominion. Beside him already stands the Kneeling Victor. Christ came to destroy the works of the devil, to take authority from him, and to liberate God's people.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

The Dragon is great, but not eternal. His head lies under the foot of the promised Savior.

The Dragon over the lesser flock

Draco is vast: it wraps Ursa Minor on three sides and stretches from Ursa Major toward Cepheus.

Thuban means “serpent’s head”. One name of Mu Draconis is linked with Lucifer. The atlas reads this as the devil confined in our universe and looming over God’s people.

John on Patmos saw the great dragon waiting to devour the woman’s child. The polar topography repeats that threat over the lesser flock.

The Kneeler strikes the fallen

The ancient name of Hercules is the Kneeler: a man exhausted by suffering, his left foot upon the Serpent’s head.

Isaiah saw the Man of sorrows. Genesis 3:15 promised that the Seed of the woman would crush the serpent’s head while the serpent bruised His heel. The sky posture and the directed foot are read with that promise.

Beside Him stands Corona Borealis: the crown of life promised to the faithful. Suffering and victory form one composition.
