The constellation Eridanus depicts the river of God's judgment directed against the rebellious spiritual powers and the kingdom of death. The image itself is very ancient: in Greco-Roman astronomy it is simply the River, winding in a long line across the southern sky. Its beginning lies directly near the foot of Orion-Kesil — the image of the bound Watchers awaiting judgment. Ptolemy literally describes the first star of the River as being after the star in Orion's foot, 'at the beginning of the river'. Nearby, above Eridanus, lies Cetus — the sea monster representing the power of death and forces hostile to God. Thus in the biblical picture, the celestial River becomes an image of the fiery stream of God's judgment, like the one Daniel saw issuing from God's throne.

Eridanus is one of the most unusual constellations in the sky.
It is not a man, animal, or object. Before us lies a vast River that begins near Orion, bends many times, and extends far to the south.
In Ptolemy, the constellation is simply called Ποταμός, 'River'. Moreover, the description begins quite concretely: the first star is near Orion's foot, 'at the beginning of the river'.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
It is precisely this position that becomes the main key to its biblical meaning.
Orion is the biblical Kesil — the image of the sinful Watchers whom God bound and keeps for judgment.
And immediately at the feet of Kesil the River begins.
This creates a completely different and much more coherent picture.
Kesil — the bound heavenly rebels. At their feet — the River. The River passes through the region of judgment.
Therefore Eridanus does not show a stream issuing from Orion, as if Orion were its source. On the contrary: the River is located near the one who himself awaits God's judgment.
This remarkably corresponds to the words of Jude:
'Angels who did not keep their own position... He has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day.'
The fiery river
The historical name Eridanus simply means River. Ancient astronomy itself gives no basis for calling it 'fiery'.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
But the biblical meaning of the image is revealed through the book of Daniel.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
The prophet sees God's throne and the Judge:
'A stream of fire issued and came out from before Him; a thousand thousands served Him... the court sat, and the books were opened.'
Here the River is directly associated with God's judgment.
Therefore the name 'Fiery river of God's judgment' is not a translation of the word Eridanus, but a biblical interpretation of the celestial figure itself.

Kesil at the beginning of the River
Near the beginning of Eridanus lies the star Cursa — β Eridani.
Its name comes from the Arabic expression kursiyy al-jawzāʾ al-muqaddam — 'the front footstool of Al-Jawza', i.e. Orion. Originally this name referred to a group of stars near Orion's feet and the beginning of Eridanus.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
This is particularly expressive in our picture.
The River of judgment begins in the area of Kesil's footstool.
But Kesil is already bound.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
God asks Job:
'Can you bind the chains of Kesil?'
The answer is obvious — no.
The Watchers cannot free themselves, and man cannot free them. They are under God's authority and await the appointed judgment.
Therefore the proximity of Kesil and the River seems to join two places of Scripture:
'Can you bind the chains of Kesil?'
and:
'A stream of fire issued... the court sat, and the books were opened.'
The bound rebel is near the River of judgment.
The River and the Whale
But Kesil is not the only adversarial image near Eridanus.
Above part of the River lies Cetus — the ancient sea monster. Aratus already described Cetus as a huge hostile monster located near the Fishes and slightly above the starry River that passes beneath it.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
In our biblical map, Cetus represents the satanic power of death and Hades, trying to hold God's people.
Thus another composition emerges:
Kesil — the rebellious Watchers. Cetus — the power of death and the ancient enemy. Between this region passes the River of judgment.
Eridanus seems to pass through the territory of hostile forces.
This recalls Daniel's vision, where after the appearance of the fiery River, judgment begins on the beastly kingdoms and their authority is taken away.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
Not the water of life
It is especially important not to confuse Eridanus with Aquarius.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
In the sky there are two completely opposite waters.
Aquarius pours out the water of life.
This water is directed to the Fish and is given freely to the thirsty. Christ Himself says:
'If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.'

Eridanus represents another side of God's authority:
not the water of life, but the River of judgment.
A strong contrast emerges:
Aquarius — water for the saved. Eridanus — river of judgment over the rebels.
One water gives life.
The other shows the final destruction of the power of evil.
The River has an end
The brightest star of the modern Eridanus is Achernar.
Its Arabic name ākhir al-nahr literally means 'End of the River'. Originally this name referred to another star that was considered the endpoint of Eridanus in the ancient catalogue; after the constellation was extended southward, the name was transferred to the modern α Eridani.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

The River has a beginning — and the River has an end.
God's judgment is not an endless chaos.
It has a goal and a completion determined by God.
Evil will not be judged forever because it will not exist forever. There will come a moment when the power of Satan, the sinful angels, death, and all rebellious kingdoms will be finally terminated.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
After judgment, God creates a new heaven and a new earth.
Unified picture
Thus Eridanus occupies a very precise place in the heavenly narrative.
It is not a river issuing from Orion-Christ — that old interpretation must be completely removed.
On the contrary:
Orion — Kesil, the bound Watchers.
At his feet the River begins.
Above the River lies Cetus — the sea monster.
The River passes through the region of forces hostile to God.
Therefore its biblical meaning is:
God's judgment comes to those who rebelled against Him.
The Watchers are bound until judgment.
The kingdom of death will be destroyed.
The ancient enemy will lose his power.
And the River of judgment will bring the history of rebellion to the end determined by God.
