The Northern Crown depicts the crown of life and righteousness prepared for those who remain faithful to Christ. It is located next to the Kneeler — the image of the Savior who strikes the serpent and through suffering comes to victory. The Victor Himself is crowned with glory and promises to share His crown with those who follow Him.
Full interpretation
Verifiable historical, etymological and topographical statements are accompanied by sources. The theological conclusions are the project’s interpretation according to its published methodology.
The constellation of the Northern Crown — Corona Borealis — is one of the 48 classical constellations of antiquity. Its seven main stars form a clearly distinguishable semicircle, resembling a wreath, a diadem, or an open crown. The constellation lies between Boötes, Hercules, and the head of Serpens.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
In the ancient prophetic picture of the sky, the Northern Crown is inseparably linked with the adjacent Kneeler. This figure, later named Hercules, depicts the Victor bending in struggle, striking the head of the Dragon while simultaneously being wounded in the heel.
This heavenly scene corresponds to the first promise of a Savior:
'He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.'
The Kneeler shows the path of Christ through humiliation, suffering, and victory, and the nearby Crown is the result of that victory. Christ endured the cross, overcame death, and was crowned with glory and honor.
However, the crown is intended not only for the Victor Himself. He promises it to all who remain faithful to Him. Therefore the Northern Crown is simultaneously:[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
the crown of Christ the Victor; the crown of life for the faithful; the crown of righteousness prepared for the Lord's appearing; the unfading crown of glory; the reward for those who complete the spiritual race.
Jesus walked the path first. He conquered sin, death, and the ancient serpent, and now calls people to follow Him. Therefore the Crown is placed next to the Kneeler: the crown cannot be separated from the victory He accomplished.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
Northern and Southern Crowns
The Northern Crown is the northern counterpart of the Southern Crown. Together they reveal one truth from two sides.
The Southern Crown is located next to Sagittarius the Victor and shows the crown belonging to the coming King.
The Northern Crown is located next to the Kneeler and shows the crown of life that the Victor offers to His people.
Thus:
in the south, Christ appears as the crowned Victor; in the north, He promises a crown to those who overcome with Him; His victory becomes the foundation of the believers' victory; His glory becomes their eternal reward.
Alphecca — the precious jewel of the crown
The main star of the constellation is Alphecca, α Coronae Borealis. Its Arabic name comes from the expression nayyir al-fakka — 'bright star of the broken ring'. The name refers to the semicircular, open shape of the constellation.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
Another ancient name for this star is Gemma. In Latin it means 'precious stone' or 'pearl'. Alphecca lies in the radiant crown like its chief jewel.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
In the spiritual picture, this reminds us of the crown of glory prepared by Christ. The crown consists not only of gold: its preciousness becomes the redeemed people who have remained faithful to their Lord.
Nusakan — two rows
The second notable star is Nusakan, β Coronae Borealis. Its name comes from the Arabic al-nasaqān — 'two lines' or 'two rows of stars'. Originally this name referred to two adjacent star rows in the regions of Hercules, Serpens, and Ophiuchus.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
In the overall heavenly history, these two rows can be compared to the two sides of the image of the crown:[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
Christ receives a crown as the one who accomplished victory. His people receive a crown as those who followed the Victor.
These are not two independent paths to glory. The believer's crown is possible only because of Christ's victory.
The sign of the crown in the Sibylline Books
A particularly close image is found in the second song of the Sibylline Oracles. It speaks of a heavenly sign like a shining wreath, and of a contest to which the Immortal calls all nations.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
Below is the full meaningful passage about the heavenly crown — lines 34–54 of the second song. The opening lines are preserved in the given Russian translation, and the concluding part is rendered close to the sense of the text:
'Afterward on heaven the Lord will show a great sign: People will see a constellation — it will be like a wreath, By its bright radiance it will illuminate the skies and long It will remain thus. And people will understand that a contest is coming, And for this very crown the Immortal calls them to strive.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
For then will come the time of great triumph In the heavenly city: here all the wide world will assemble, Each one may become a partaker of imperishable glory. All peoples then, in immortal races, to victory, Than which there is none more beautiful, will press on; and the sinner cannot There shamefully buy the victor's crown for money.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
And justly will the blessed Savior distribute rewards. He will crown the faithful, and those who have endured torments, Ending the struggle in death, will have an immortal prize. Those who kept purity and strove for the imperishable victory, He will reward according to their deeds; also those who kept justice. He will not forget even those living among distant peoples, If they acted righteously and knew the one God. Those who honored marriage and rejected disgraceful debauchery Will receive a rich gift, and their hope will never perish, For every human soul is a gift of God.'[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
In the surviving Russian text, this passage is indeed in the second song, lines 34–54. It speaks not merely of a crown in heaven, but of a crown as a reward in a spiritual contest, which the Savior justly bestows.
This image remarkably corresponds to the placement of the Northern Crown next to the Kneeler:
in heaven a shining crown appears; the Immortal calls people to the race; the contest is open to all peoples; the crown cannot be bought; the Savior Himself determines the reward; the faithful receive an immortal crown.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
The Northern Crown thus becomes an image of the Gospel addressed to the whole world: the Savior has accomplished victory and now calls people to enter into it.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
The Hercules–Corona Borealis Great Wall
In 2013–2014, astronomers reported the discovery of an unusually large concentration of gamma-ray bursts in the direction of the constellations Hercules and Corona Borealis. The proposed structure was named the Hercules–Corona Borealis Great Wall.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
It is important to understand the nature of the discovery accurately. Astronomers do not observe a continuous visible wall of galaxies before them. Rather, it concerns a statistically significant concentration of distant gamma-ray bursts, which are used as indicators of regions of active star formation and matter distribution. Therefore, the existence of this structure as a single physically connected formation is still debated. Researchers consider the data serious but emphasize that more complete observations are needed for a final conclusion.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
Initially, its estimated extent was roughly 2–3 gigaparsecs, i.e., about 6–10 billion light-years. The concentration is observed at redshifts around z=2, so we see the corresponding region as it existed more than ten billion years ago.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
More recent studies continue to find evidence of large-scale clustering of gamma-ray bursts in this region and allow that its dimensions may be even larger than initial estimates. However, the authors still speak of detecting a statistical structure, not of a definitively mapped continuous wall of galaxies.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
The scale of the proposed structure raises questions about how quickly such enormous inhomogeneities could form in the early universe. This does not automatically disprove the Big Bang, but it does require refining models of the large-scale structure of the universe and the limits of applicability of the cosmological principle.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
In the symbolic picture of the atlas, the name of this structure takes on a remarkable resonance:
Hercules — Corona Borealis becomes Kneeler — Crown of life.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
The vast region of distant space bears the names of two neighboring celestial images already connected in the ancient map:[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
Christ bends in struggle; strikes the ancient serpent; passes through suffering; gains victory; receives a crown; offers that crown to His people.
This cannot be presented as scientific proof of the prophetic significance of the constellations. But within the unified symbolic picture of the sky, such a coincidence becomes a powerful reminder: even on the largest scales, the Victor and the crown He promised stand side by side.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
Unified meaning of the constellation
The meanings of the Northern Crown form a sequential narrative:
Man lost his original glory through sin. Christ came as the promised Seed of the woman. The Kneeler entered into battle with the ancient serpent. He was wounded but struck the enemy's head. Through death and resurrection He gained victory. The Father crowned Him with glory and honor. The Victor promised the crown of life to all the faithful. This crown cannot be bought — it is given by the Savior. People from all nations are called to finish their race. The overcomers will enter the heavenly city and share in the imperishable glory of Christ.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
The Northern Crown is not merely a sign of royal authority. It is the crown to which the path of faithfulness leads. Beside it stands the Kneeler, because before glory came the cross, before the crown — suffering, before enthronement — victory over the serpent.
Christ does not offer man victory by his own strength. He has already accomplished the decisive victory and calls the believer to hold fast what has been given, so that no one may seize his crown.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
