Summary

Cepheus depicts the Lord Jesus Christ as the enthroned King. He is crowned with a crown, holds a royal scepter, and is placed next to the Little Flock. The names of his stars speak of the Shepherd, the flock of sheep, and the right hand — the place of authority and royal power.

Full interpretation

Verifiable historical, etymological and topographical statements are accompanied by sources. The theological conclusions are the project’s interpretation according to its published methodology.

The constellation Cepheus is located next to Ursa Minor, which represents the Little Flock — Israel, God's people. On ancient charts, Cepheus is depicted as a majestic King: on his head is a crown, in one hand he holds a cloak, and in the other — a royal scepter.

In some Arabic traditions, the constellation was called Al-Multaghib, meaning 'fiery' or 'ardent'. This image speaks not of an indifferent ruler, but of a King filled with power, zeal, and fire.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

The meaning of the constellation is especially clearly revealed by the names of its main stars.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

Alrai — γ Cephei comes from the Arabic ar-rā‘ī and means 'Shepherd'. On the celestial map this star is located in the region of the royal scepter. Thus the King's scepter also becomes a shepherd's staff: Christ rules His people and shepherds the sheep that belong to Him.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

Alderamin — α Cephei means 'right hand'. In Scripture, the right hand is an image of power, authority, and royal dignity. After the resurrection, Jesus Christ sat down at the right hand of God the Father, receiving authority over heaven and earth.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

Alfirk — β Cephei comes from the Arabic al-firqah and means 'flock of sheep'. This star connects the image of the King with the image of His people. Christ is not only the Ruler but also the Good Shepherd, who knows His sheep, gathers them, and leads them to eternal life.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

If the meanings of the stars are combined, a unified picture emerges:

The fiery King ascends the throne. He possesses the authority of the right hand. His royal scepter is the Shepherd's staff. His flock of sheep is beside Him. He rules His people, protects them, and brings them into His Kingdom.

Cepheus is closely connected with Ursa Minor. On ancient images, one of his feet seems to rest upon it. This image reminds us that Christ came into the world through the people of Israel, being born in the lineage of Abraham and David. He is the promised Messiah to Israel, but His authority extends to all nations.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

Due to precession, the north celestial pole gradually moves toward the constellation Cepheus. In the overall history of the heavens, this becomes an image of the transfer of royal authority to Christ. The world still resists His rule, but the time will come when every knee will bow before Him and every tongue confess that He is Lord.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

Cepheus therefore shows Jesus Christ after the completion of His earthly journey: the humiliated Savior rose, ascended, and was enthroned. He sits at the right hand of the Father, holds the royal scepter, and shepherds His people as the Good Shepherd.

Stories of the sky

The Dragon over the lesser flock

Draco is vast: it wraps Ursa Minor on three sides and stretches from Ursa Major toward Cepheus.

Thuban means “serpent’s head”. One name of Mu Draconis is linked with Lucifer. The atlas reads this as the devil confined in our universe and looming over God’s people.

John on Patmos saw the great dragon waiting to devour the woman’s child. The polar topography repeats that threat over the lesser flock.

The reigning Christ

Cepheus is the king with sceptre and “shepherd” (Alrai). One foot rests toward the pole and Ursa Minor.

Polaris is the guiding star rising from Israel — “the bright and morning star”. Through precession the pole moved from Thuban to Kochab, then to Polaris, and later toward Alderamin — Cepheus’s “right hand”.

The atlas reads this as the Son’s path: birth among Israel, service as the world’s guide, and seating at the Father’s right hand.

The camel that brings the bride

Between Ursa Major and Cassiopeia lies Camelopardalis; the older name of the region is the camel.

Plancius linked the figure with the camel that brought Rebekah to Isaac — a type of the Spirit bringing the Bride-Church to Christ.

Cassiopeia even has a star called “the camel’s hump”. The path from the earthly flock to the Wife’s throne passes through this mediator.
