Full interpretation

Verifiable historical, etymological and topographical statements are accompanied by sources. The theological conclusions are the project’s interpretation according to its published methodology.

The constellation Corvus is one of the 48 classical constellations of antiquity. It is located on the back of the great Hydra and directly next to the constellation of the Cup.

This arrangement creates one of the most unified scenes in the southern sky:

The Lion strikes and tears Hydra; the Cup is poured out upon the ancient serpent; the Crow sinks its claws and beak into it; evil is finally condemned and destroyed.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

In Sumerian tradition, the Crow was called UGA.MUŠEN — 'Raven', and Hydra was MUŠ, 'Serpent'. Already in the ancient star map the bird was associated with the serpent lying beneath it.[Hunger & Pingree · MUL.APIN][Rogers · Origins][Вавилонские звёздные каталоги][Stellarium · MUL.APIN][Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

In a prophetic sense, the Crow is not an independent image of evil, but part of the picture of divine retribution. It represents the birds of judgment gathering over the defeated forces that rose against God.

This scene corresponds to the images in Scripture where birds are summoned to the great supper after the defeat of the beast's kingdom. In Revelation, an angel calls all the birds of heaven to the slain enemies of God. The Crow tearing at Hydra becomes a celestial depiction of that same final sentence.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

The Crow above Hydra

Hydra is one of the chief celestial images of the ancient serpent. It stretches across a vast portion of the sky, but in the end it is surrounded by signs of judgment:

above its head is the Lion; on its back stands the Cup; beside it sits the Crow; the whole constellation is under the authority of the coming King.

The Crow does not fight the serpent on equal terms. It appears when the sentence has already been pronounced and the enemy is defeated. Therefore its image signifies not the beginning of the struggle, but its completion.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

First Christ appears as the Lion. Then the Cup of wrath is poured out upon the kingdom of evil. After that, the birds of judgment gather over the vanquished foe.

Hyena — the right wing of the Crow

The brightest star of the constellation is Hyena, γ Corvi. Its name comes from the Arabic expression meaning 'right wing of the Crow'.

The wing indicates movement and the swift execution of judgment. God's judgment will not remain only declared: it will be put into action.

Algorab — the Crow

The star Algorab, δ Corvi bears a name derived from the Arabic al-ghurāb — 'crow'.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

This name directly preserves the image of the whole constellation. A related Semitic root appears in the Hebrew word orev — 'raven'. It was the raven that Noah first sent out from the ark after the flood.

However, in the scene next to Hydra the meaning is different: this is no longer a bird seeking dry land, but a bird of judgment perched over the defeated serpent.

Kraz — support and claws

The star Kraz, β Corvi is located in the lower part of the bird's figure. It is associated with the image of a support, foot, or talons.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

In the overall picture, this reminds us of the Crow standing firmly on the back of Hydra. The serpent no longer rules nor moves freely: it is held fast and handed over to judgment.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

Alchiba — tent

The star Alchiba, α Corvi is associated with the Arabic image of a tent or pavilion. Before the Greek figure of the bird was fixed, Arabic observers saw in the quadrilateral of bright stars of the Crow the form of a traveler's tent.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

This ancient image refers primarily to the geometry of the constellation, but in the overall heavenly history it may remind us of the established order of God: the place of judgment is determined, the sentence is confirmed, and the enemy can no longer escape retribution.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

The Crow, the Cup, Hydra, and the Lion

These four constellations must be read as a single composition.

Hydra

Hydra depicts the ancient serpent, Satan, and the forces that rose against God.

The Cup

The Cup shows the fullness of God's wrath and the limit of long-suffering. When the measure of iniquity is filled, judgment is poured out.

The Crow

The Crow depicts the execution of the sentence and the triumph over the defeated enemy.

The Lion

The Lion is Christ — the King, Judge, and Victor who finally crushes the ancient serpent.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

Together they tell a sequential story:

The ancient serpent rises against God. His iniquity reaches its fullness. The Cup of judgment is poured out. The Lion strikes and tears the serpent. The Crow tears at the defeated enemy. The kingdom of evil is destroyed. God is exalted and shines forth. God becomes all in all.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

Greek tradition

Unified meaning of the constellation

The meaning of the Crow is revealed through its position and neighboring constellations:[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

The Crow is on the back of the ancient serpent. It sinks its talons into the defeated Hydra. Beside it stands the filled Cup of judgment. The Lion rules over the entire scene. Judgment upon the forces of evil becomes final. The victory belongs to Christ. After the last enemy is destroyed, God will be all in all.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

The Crow therefore is the bird of completed judgment. It proclaims not chaos and death in themselves, but the final end of the serpent's power.

The heavenly scene reaches its climax here: the Lion reigns, the Cup is poured out, Hydra is prostrate, and the Crow tears at the remnants of evil. Nothing that rose against God will last forever.
