Summary

Keel — Christ as the foundation of salvation, on which the entire Ship of God's people rests. In antiquity, the Keel, Sails, and Stern constituted one huge Heavenly Ship; modern Carina represents its hull and lower load-bearing part. If the Sails show God's people led by the wind of the Spirit, then the Keel shows that on which this people rests: 'For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.' The ship passes through the waters of judgment and reaches the harbor because its foundation is Christ.

Full interpretation

Verifiable historical, etymological and topographical statements are accompanied by sources. The theological conclusions are the project’s interpretation according to its published methodology.

The Keel cannot be separated from the ancient Heavenly Ship. The modern constellations Carina, Vela, and Puppis originally formed one huge constellation — Argo Navis. Moreover, Carina in the modern system represents not merely a narrow keel, but the main part of the ship's hull, its load-bearing structure.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

This reveals a very precise biblical image. If the whole Ship is the saved people of God, then its foundation is Christ. The Church does not rest on human wisdom, religious systems, or its own righteousness. Beneath the whole structure lies one foundation — Jesus Christ.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

Therefore the Keel and the Sails must be read together:

Keel — Christ, on whom we are established. Sails — the Holy Spirit, by whom we are led.

Without a sturdy hull, the ship cannot withstand the sea; without wind, it cannot reach its destination. So also in salvation: Christ is the foundation, and the Holy Spirit leads God's people along the path prepared by God.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

Especially significant is the main star of this region — Canopus, the second brightest star in the night sky. In Ptolemy's ancient description, it was located on one of the steering oars of the Ship, meaning it was connected not only with the hull but also with guiding its movement. This strengthens the overall picture: the saved people are not left to themselves — the Ship has a Foundation and a direction.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

Another ancient detail is Aspidiske, "small shield." This name is connected with a shield depicted on the ancient Ship. This gives yet another biblical nuance: the One who is the foundation of salvation is also the protection of those who are in Him.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

The entire heavenly picture of the Ship therefore unfolds sequentially: God saves His people, establishes them on Christ, leads them by the Spirit, and brings them home. The Keel shows the most fundamental thing in this journey: salvation is possible only because under the entire Ship there is a solid foundation.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]
