Summary

Capricornus stands between Sagittarius and Aquarius and explains how Christ defeated the power of sin. Sagittarius strikes Scorpius, but the victory is accomplished through sacrifice: Algedi means 'kid/goat', and Dabih comes from an Arabic name associated with slaughter. The ancient Capricorn was a Goat-Fish, so its figure simultaneously leads further—to Aquarius and the water of life.

Full interpretation

Verifiable historical, etymological and topographical statements are accompanied by sources. The theological conclusions are the project’s interpretation according to its published methodology.

Capricornus must be read together with its neighbouring constellations:

Scorpius — sin and the sting of death. Sagittarius — Christ come to strike Scorpius. Capricornus — the sacrifice through which the victory is accomplished. Aquarius — Christ pouring out the water of life and the Holy Spirit.

Therefore Capricornus answers the question:

How did Christ defeat Scorpius?

Not merely by force.

He gave Himself.

The ancient Mesopotamian name for the constellation — SUḪUR.MAŠ, Suhurmāšu — means "Goat-Fish." This image is indeed attested in ancient sources and was connected with Ea/Enki and the region of waters.[Hunger & Pingree · MUL.APIN][Rogers · Origins][Вавилонские звёздные каталоги][Stellarium · MUL.APIN]

Especially interesting are the Arabic names of the stars.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

Algedi comes from al-jady — "goat, kid." This does not simply mean "child," so the older idea that "He was sent as a child" should not be inferred from the star name.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

Much more important is Dabih — β Capricorni. The name comes from the ancient Arabic asterism saʿd al-dhābiḥ. It is rendered as "the lucky stars of the Slaughterer" or "Fortune of the Slaughterer." The exact history of the name's origin is lost, so we need not invent a specific winter ritual. But the connection of the word itself with slaughter is real.

Nearby is also Alshat — "sheep."

Thus in the head of the ancient Goat-Fish are the images:

kid → sheep → slaughter.

This fits well with the biblical theme of sacrifice.

Christ came to defeat sin not only as a mighty Victor. He conquered by offering Himself:

"Christ was sacrificed once to bear the sins of many."

And here the very form of Capricornus is especially important.[Kunitzsch & Smart][IAU · имена звёзд]

The front part is a goat.

The back part is a fish.

After Capricornus, the watery part of the heavenly story continues directly — Aquarius, pouring out the water of life.

Therefore Capricornus becomes a transitional constellation:

defeat of sin → sacrifice of Christ → water of life.

First Christ gives Himself.

Then comes the outpouring of the Spirit.

The same sequence we see in the New Testament: Christ dies, rises, and ascends, and then pours out the promised Holy Spirit.

Thus Capricornus occupies a very precise place between Sagittarius and Aquarius:

SAGITTARIUS → CAPRICORNUS → AQUARIUS

Victor → Sacrifice → Giver of the Spirit

Christ destroys the power of Scorpius through His own sacrifice, and the result of that victory is new life and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
